This past week I've been giving some attention to the Elements, and their corresponding nature spirits known as the Elementals. This has been a very rewarding experience. I have conjured them before many times in my magical workings in the aspects of circle-casting, so I am familiar with them. What is new to me is that I've actually been able to notice them more readily with my psychic sight. In my early workings many years ago I worked with them in the pure form as element characteristics of Earth, Air, Water & Fire. Now, in my re-emergence in the Craft, I have been looking at them in their Elemental presence as Gnome, Sylphs, Undines & Salamanders.
This was inspired by my daily time spent at the park attuning myself to nature. Also I was at the public library, when my feet took me intuitively towards the biography section of the shelves where I came across a book by Colin Wilson on the late Magician Aleister Crowley titled "The Nature of the Beast" I never read this work, so I decided to check it out. I did read Wilson's book on the Paranormal many years ago titled "Poltergeist" (I have been on many a Ghost Hunting expedition since), and I like his writing. I've also read most of Crowley's works in my studies into the Art of High Magick; however I am not that interested in pursuing that level of Magick, it did inform my practice immensely though. In the book's first chapters Wilson points to some of the realities of working with Magickal entities, and some of the havoc they can cause when conjured in Magickal workings. While he is speaking about the conjuration of things from the Goetia that Crowley worked with, it is a basic warning that things imagined with enough power of will can manifest themselves in our physical world. It is up to the reader to discern for themselves if those things are from the mental processes of the mind, or if they are unique in their own existence separate from the mind & are called forth from where they reside. I believe it is a measure of both these aspects working together.
The point of mentioning this in regards to my current interest is that days later I decided to Google search images of Elementals. I wanted to see how people have artistically rendered them. What I discovered was a vast assortment of imagery. Much of it was worth saving for later reference. Since the process of Magick does require the practitioner to inflame the imagination with strong visualization of the various workings that are manifested from ritual work. I felt that this imagery would be a good guide to my own visualization. What a shocking surprise it has been since I looked at all this art. Suddenly, I am able to see these entities with my psychic sight more clearly. It is now beyond just having a feeling, I now have a visual foundation to their many forms, and it has opened up my interaction with them in fantastic ways.
I could elucidate much more on this discovery, but I think it is best left for my 'Book of Shadows' Magickal Journal section. What I want to share with the reader is that if you have not discovered them in their native form, then look at some reference images like I have, and then use your psychic eyes to look to them in nature. They will appear to you, it's as if they are happy that you have noticed them. A word of caution. Treat them with respect. They are beings of potentiality that exist and they should be treated with kindness just as you would treat any human being. If you anger a person in life they will react in a most unpleasant manner. The same can be said about the Elementals. They have a Magick all their own, and you want them to share it with you, not use it against you with their unique form of mischief. They are powerful beings of Magick, if you see them, befriend them with kindness, and they will return their friendship with insights & protection.
